Protecting Muscle on a GLP-1: Protein, Training, and Habits
The medication reduces appetite, it does not choose what you eat. Why that distinction decides your outcome.

Why this matters more than the scale
Any rapid weight loss includes some lean mass, not just fat. On a GLP-1 the risk is amplified because appetite drops so sharply that many clients end up eating far too little overall, and protein is usually the first thing to fall away. Losing muscle lowers your resting metabolism, which makes maintaining your result harder later. The clients who keep their weight off are almost always the ones who protected muscle on the way down.
Protein first, every meal
Make protein the first thing you eat at every meal, because with a smaller appetite whatever you eat first is what actually gets eaten. Build meals around eggs, chicken, fish, lean beef, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, and legumes. A shake is a legitimate tool on days nothing sounds appealing, and we would rather you hit your target with a shake than miss it entirely. We set a specific daily target with you at your check ins based on your body and your goals.
Eating enough, on purpose
When hunger stops being your cue, eating has to become scheduled rather than intuitive. Three planned meals, or smaller portions more frequently if nausea is an issue, beats waiting to feel hungry and then eating almost nothing at 8pm. Keep fluids and electrolytes up, dehydration mimics fatigue and worsens constipation. If you notice hair thinning, low energy, or feeling cold, those are common signs of undereating and worth raising at your next check in.
Resistance training is the other half
Protein gives your body the material, resistance training gives it the reason to keep muscle. Two or three sessions a week is enough, and it does not need to be a gym program, bands, bodyweight work, or a pair of dumbbells at home count. Focus on the big movements, some form of squat, hinge, push, pull, and carry. Walking is excellent for overall health but it does not preserve muscle the way loading it does.
Sleep and consistency
Under-slept clients lose more lean mass and struggle more with cravings when appetite returns. Aim for seven to nine hours and treat it as part of the program rather than an extra. Consistency beats intensity across all of this, a protein target you hit most days and two workouts a week you actually do will outperform an ambitious plan you abandon in month two.
Building for after the program
The habits in this article are what stand between a result that holds and one that reverses. Appetite generally returns when medication stops, so the eating patterns, training routine, and protein habit you build now are the actual plan for maintenance. We discuss a maintenance strategy with you rather than an abrupt stop, and start that conversation well before you reach your goal.
